Unlike Western medicine, crude materials of traditional Chinese medicine are mostly from plants, animals and natural minerals produced both in China and abroad. The quality of crude materials casts a direct influence on the effect of the finished product. That explains why Tongrentang has always paid great attention to the selection of crude materials, no matter how high the cost.

In old China, there were two distributing markets for medicinal materials, namely Zhangshu in the south of China and Qizhou in the north. Tongrentang had long monopolized the Qizhou market, and every decision had potential impact on the quotations of medicinal materials across northern China. These markets did not open until Tongrentang appeared. Now, the routine is still maintained in the Bozhou Chinese crude drug Market. However, Tongrentang has never used its dominant position to get higher profits. Instead, it overwhelms all medicinal material merchants with fair prices and credibility; the merchants therefore provide their best-quality products to Tongrentang.

Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine is facing new challenges. The pesticide remnants and heavy metal contents in some traditional Chinese medicine don't meet international standards, which has slowed down its pace towards the international market. To solve this problem, Tongrentang has established a strict quality control system for its products from the very beginning. Its twelve herb-planting bases in Jilin, Hebei, Shanxi, Hubei, Shandong, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces are located in mountainous areas far away from human habitats and industrial pollution. Pesticides are prudently applied in the planting process. The establishment of these bases, on the one hand, helps protect the environment of wild plants, and on the other hand, ensures the production of pollution-free medicinal materials. These herb-planting bases have passed the SFDA GAP authentication, and the medicinal materials they produce not only meet the demands of Tongrentang itself, but also meet the needs of other pharmaceuticals.

Based on a thorough research of nature, proper dosage, and the amount of microorganisms in its products, Tongrentang has gradually formulated its own quality control standards, which are much stricter than relevant state standards.

Tongrentang has invested a total of 240 million yuan to renovate its manufacturing subsidiaries in accordance with the national GMP standards and the ISO9001 authentication. All production lines at its manufacturing bases have fulfilled the national GMP standards.

Tongrentang gives a flawless performance both in the GAP authentication for crude materials and in the GMP authentication for drug production. In the process of selling its drug to customers, it never relaxes quality control, for which it has introduced the GSP authentication.

The GSP authentication is a state standardized quality management system for drug suppliers. All Tongrentang drug stores fastidiously follow the “Six Unified”—unified purchase, unified delivery, unified pricing, unified label, unified computer management and unified quality control—that guarantee the safety and reliability of drug sold by Tongrentang.

Tongrentang carries out the GAP, GMP and GSP authentications just because it attempts to ensure the quality of its products from herb planting to sale terminals. This also shows that Tongrentang is determined to fulfill its historical mission of “Advocating morality and saving lives” and follow the old motto of “No manpower was to be spared, no matter how complicated the procedures of pharmaceutical production were, and no material was to be reduced, no matter how much the cost.”
