Thanks to its progress in science and technology, Tongrentang Group has constantly made fruitful achievements in new product development.

Among its new products are Sailong Anti-Rheumatism Wine (which has been honored with the State Category ? New Medicine title), the Qiju Dihuang Concentrated Pill, the Huoxue Tongmai Film-Coated Tablet, the Banlangen Granule (Sugar-Free) and Yufeng Ningxin Film-Coated Tablet, all of which sell well in the marketplace. The group has also won the National Second Prize for Technological Invention, two prizes for industrialization of high and new technological results and several national patents.

The group also develops new products on the basis of the further research of its current products. Some of its traditional products, such as Liuwei Dihuang Wan , Tongren Dahuoluo Wan and Niuhuang Shangqing Wan , all pills, once showed limited market potential because a great dosage had to be taken. Through renovations, Tongrentang has developed new medicine featuring increased safety and effectiveness and greater convenience. It has also introduced efficient quality control technology and formulated clinical effect appraisal standards that are internationally recognized, which have intensified the group's competitiveness and further expansion on the international market.

Tongrentang will speed its pace in the technological innovation of its products, mainly focusing on innovations of medicine forms, technology and standards.

1. Innovation of Dose Forms of Medicine

The group will strengthen its efforts in developing medicine with accurate effects and limited side effects, extracted from tangible ingredients. Meanwhile, it will readjust the market orientation of its traditional medical products.

Up to now, the new dose forms of its finished products include pills, film-coated tablets, hard capsules, granules, Oral solutions, dripping pill and soft capsules.

The group has cooperated with the Pharmacology School of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine to develop the Qingnao Xuanqiao Pill, and cooperated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences to develop the Shuxin Huanshi Tablet and the Shuangshen Tongguan Capsule and extract nerve-comforting ingredients from date seeds.

2. Technological Innovation

The group joins hands with the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the research of herb-compound extraction technology applied in water pills, which has been listed as one of the National Major Innovative Projects. Such new techniques as adsorption with macro-pore polymeric adsorbent, micron ultra, film coating, and membrane filtration, are used in medicine production.

3. Innovation of Standards

Through revising its quality standards, Tongrentang Group has formulated its internal quality control standards, even stricter than the State Pharmacopoeia Standards. In addition, it has participated in drafting standards for 53 new products that are added to the Pharmacopoeia.

In order to ensure the quality of raw materials, the group has established herb-planting bases according to the Good Agricultural Practice for Chinese Crude Drugs (GAP), producing medicinal herbs that meet international standards for pesticide remains and heavy metal amounts.
